Free Curriculum Content
Roots of Rhythm World Drumming for 5th and 6th Grade Classrooms
takes teachers and students on an exciting journey to explore different
cultures, music, and percussion instruments from around the world and
enjoy both listening to and playing authentic rhythms using ethnically
diverse percussive instruments.
A key feature of the workshop is the making of simple musical
instruments which provide both a rewarding multidisciplinary activity
and quick solution to obtaining instruments for each student. The
Roots of Rhythm Teacher's Guide contains lessons, references,
activity sheets, and a companion CD with musical examples of authentic
musical traditions and play-along exercises. The cross-curricular
content and activities align with National Academic Content Standards in
music, history, social studies, and geography.
The Roots of Rhythm Teacher's Guide and audio examples are available as
free downloads at the Percussion Marketing Council's website
www.rootsofrhythm.net, and at
the International House of Blues Foundation website
www.ihobf.org.
Teaching Opportunities
Roots of Rhythm creates opportunities for many students to learn
about music and participate in music-making activities without
necessarily being enrolled in more traditional, performance-based music
classes such as band, orchestra, or choir. In addition, although the
curriculum is intended primarily for fifth and sixth grades, music and
general classroom teachers can adapt the content for use with other
subjects and grade levels.
